Olive oil is the origin of savon de Marseille, the famous French saop with the longest tradition. The savon de Marseille - a traditional olive oil saop was produced in the area around Marseille 500 years ago.
It was Ludwig XIV, the Sun King, who established the first rules for the production of soap during the 17th century. Savon de Marseille was only allowed to be called soap, if produced in and around Marseille and its main component, olive oil and water found in the Mediterranean. This law is still in forced (although, meanwhile, the regulations allow other vegetable oils).
Olive, palm or coconut oils are still used in the production of soap. The vegetable oils are mixed with soda at 120 ° C and cooked in large tanks. Afterward being washed out with salt water, the soap needs to be dried for 48 hours. Subsequently, the soap is cut into blocks and processed.
