DIY Make-up

The do-it-yourself trend has reached the beauty industry with a bang. We've compiled some fashionable make-up recipes so you can create your very own eyeshadows, powders and eyeliners. Take a look!

Eyeshadows

Arrowroot is the raw material that is used as a base for DIY eyeshadows. Use 1/4 teaspoon to start off with and add your favourite colour until the perfect shade is achieved.

Ingredients

  • Base: arrowroot
  • Brown eyeshadow: cocoa powder
  • Pink eyeshadow: beetroot powder
  • Green eyeshadow: spirulina
  • Black or grey eyeshadow: Activated charcoal

For a creamy texture simply add a small amount of shea butter to the powder mixture. This moisturises the lids and prevents the colour from rubbing off.

Powder

A powder that adds more tone to the complexion requires arrowroot as a base component mixed with one part cocoa powder and one part nutmeg until the perfect shade is achieved. Warning: Double-check to ensure that you are not allergic to nutmeg before use.

Eyeliner and Mascara

This practical recipe can be used to make your own eyeliner or mascara.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons aloe vera gel
  • 3/4 teaspoon beeswax
  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon shea butter
  • 1 capsule activated charcoal
  • Option: an empty mascara tube (thoroughly cleaned)

Eyeliner: Place the beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter and aloe vera in a heat-resistant container. Place the container in a pot with water. Heat the water allowing the ingredients to melt slowly. Slowly add the activated charcoal and mix well.

Mascara: Use a funnel to pour the mixture into the empty mascara tube. Alternatively, pour the mixture into a normal container and use an applicator brush to pick up product when needed.
