The farfalla Midwife Grant

The farfalla Midwife Grant

farfalla established the midwife project to decrease the high maternal death rate of young mothers in developing countries across the globe. Each farfalla product sold contributes to financing a midwife's training stretching across several years in some of the poorest countries in the world. Currently, midwives are being trained in Ethiopia but the company hopes to expand to more countries in need over the course of 20 years.

How did the project come about?

  • "When we heard stories of women working for our cooperatives in Madagascar, we realised the seriousness of the matter at hand. In many developing countries almost 1 in 100 mothers still die during childbirth and often the baby, too. Their siblings are then faced with having to survive without a mother. "
  • In Europe, the mortality rate has been greatly reduced thanks to the professional care of the mothers during pregnancy, among other things, by well-trained midwives. Still, 1 out of 10 000 women dies during childbirth in Europe today, a risk that is 100 times smaller in the Sahel. The reason: there are not enough midwives in the poorest countries of the world. Especially in rural areas, there are no prenatal check-ups for the women and they give birth without any medicinal assistance. A skilled midwife could take care of about 500 pregnancies from the beginning. The survival rate of the mother and child could be increased immensely through early diagnosis of complications as well as professional care during and after birth.
  • The midwife project is thus set up so that young mothers and their babies receive support during childbirth as well as pre and postnatal care.
